Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., led an earlier proposal in the Senate that also would tie more EV tax credits to motor vehicles assembled in unionized U.S. factories.

“We can not guidance any proposal that results in a discriminatory natural environment in our states by punishing autoworkers and vehicle firms because the employees in their plants selected not to unionize,” the governors wrote in the letter.

“By placing selected vehicles at a expense disadvantage, this legislation will work against our states, undercuts our citizens and negatively impacts the U.S. economic system,” they wrote. “Congress should not enact proposals that favor autos developed by a single operate force about yet another, especially when carrying out so substantially limitations buyer alternative and undermines more substantial carbon emission reduction goals.”

The governors who signed the letter to Household Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader Kevin McCarty, Senate Vast majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Chief Mitch McConnell are from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, did not sign the letter. Her state is dwelling to the UAW.

The group is urging Congress to “look at the investment and work produced by all automakers — nonunion shops incorporated” as they appraise the proposals.
